A short history of the Shady Oak |
Built in 1840, The Shady Oak was opened as an
Inn 1841 to cater for workers and passenger on the Cromford and High
Peak Railway and employees of a nearby gun powder works. The railway was completed in 1830 and was mainly used to transport minerals and aggregates to the canal basin at Whaley Bridge for an onward journey by barge to the great centres of Manchester and Liverpool. Twenty year old blacksmith Hugh Oldham was the first publican and employed fifteen year old Willie Hibberson as a servant. The current licensees, Sue and Craig took over in December 2008 |
